DHAN TERAS | CHHOTI DIWALI SPECIAL NAILART

Day after tomorrow is a very auspicious occasion of Dhan (Wealth) Teras (thirtheen) also known as Dhan Trayodashi and Chhoti (Small) Diwali, which is celebrated on thirteen day of Krishna Paksha (Dark Fortnight) in the month of Aso as per Indian Calendar . Diwali is a 5 days festival : Dhanteras, Kali Chaudash, Diwali, New Year and Bhai Beej or Bhai Duj.

Dhanteras is the beginning of celebration. Also this day is a day to worship Lord Ganesha – Remover of Obstacles,  Goddess Lakshmi -Goddess of Weath and God Dhanvantari- God of Ayurveda for the health, wealth and happiness that will stay forever.

There are many mythical stories behind this auspicious occasion. It is said that on this day Goddess Laxmiji herself visits the houses of her devotees and if she likes the place, she decides to stay forever.

People start preparing for Goddess Lakshmi’s arrival weeks in advance by decorating their porches with colorful designs, or rangoli, preparing sweets and savories, and lighting diyas. In the evening all the family members dress out nicely, and together they worship Laxmiji and pray to bless them with  ethical economic prosperity and success in their careers. And after Laxmi Pooja adults and children lit fireworks to celebrate the festivities.

I too have decorated my nails with holy ‘Kalash‘ – Symbol of  prosperity and power, Behind it is a Swastik– Symbol of Wisdom, Words written above kalash in Red are Shubh – Goodness and Labh – Benefits, Rangoli, Diya, Lord Ganesha and Goddess Laxmiji showring their blessings and holy feet of Goddess Laxmi entering inside the house. I also have added ‘Toran‘ – a decorative door hanging made from ‘Asopalav Leaf (Indian fir tree)or Mango Tree leaf and Marigold Flowers. Toran is a part of Indian Culture  on the occasion of festivals and weddings.

Overall I have tried to capture the essence of the festival as much as possible within my limitations. Figure drawing isn’t my comfort zone, so excuse me for the mess and flaws. I have used acrylic paints on top of white gel base. Not super happy with the final outcome, just happy that I dared to draw figures with little bit details. Hope you will like it!
